Fascia and barge board repairs in Adelaide. Fix the rot before it takes your gutters with it.
Peeling paint, soft timber and rust streaks are the fascia telling you it is on the way out. We replace the rotted sections and cap the run in Colorbond, so your gutters have something solid to hang off and you never paint that edge again.

How to tell your fascia is failing
Peeling and bubbling paint
The first sign moisture is getting into the timber. Once the paint film breaks, the board soaks up water and the rot accelerates.
Soft or spongy timber
If it gives when pressed, the timber has gone. Paint will not save it, and gutter brackets will not hold in it.
Rust streaks down the board
Iron stains bleeding down the fascia mean the gutter fixings are rusting into wet timber behind them.
Gutter pulling away
A gutter that is sagging or lifting off the edge usually means the fascia behind it has softened and let the fixings go.
Damp or daylight in the eaves
Water stains, musty smell or visible light in the soffit means the roof edge is no longer sealed to weather.
Split or cupped barge boards
The exposed gable-end boards split and cup under Adelaide sun and driving rain, opening the roof cavity to the weather.
How we repair a roof edge properly
1. Replace what has gone
We take out the rotted fascia or barge sections and replace with sound timber, so there is a solid, straight edge to work from.
2. Cap and seal
Colour-matched Colorbond fascia cover over the sound run, sealed at the joins, so the edge is weatherproof and paint-free for good.
3. Re-hang the gutter
Gutter re-fixed to the new edge at the correct fall and bracket spacing, then flushed and handed over with a workmanship warranty.
The fascia is doing more than you think
The fascia carries your gutters. Every litre of water off the roof is held up by that board, so when it softens, the gutters sag, the fall goes wrong, and the overflow makes the timber rot faster. It is a loop that only gets more expensive the longer it runs.
Fixing the fascia and the gutter together breaks that loop for good: a solid, capped edge that sheds water, holds the gutter true, and seals the roof cavity against the weather and the pests that follow it in.
- Rotted fascia lets gutters sag, which drives overflow and more rot
- An open roof edge invites possums, birds and vermin into the cavity
- Water tracking behind the eaves reaches the wall framing and ceiling
Frequently asked questions
The fascia is the long board that runs horizontally along the edge of the roof, behind the gutter. It is what the gutter is fixed to, and it closes off the ends of the roof timbers. The barge board is the same idea on the sloped gable ends of the roof, where there is no gutter. Both hold the roof edge together and keep weather out of the roof cavity, and both are usually timber on older Adelaide homes.
The tell-tale signs are peeling or bubbling paint, timber that feels soft or spongy when pressed, rust streaks bleeding down from the gutter, gaps opening where the gutter is pulling away, and daylight or damp in the eaves. If the timber is still sound and it is just the paint, a repair and repaint is enough. If it is soft, split or rotted through, that section needs replacing, because new gutter brackets will not hold in rotten timber.
It depends on the state of the timber. If the fascia is still structurally sound, a Colorbond fascia cover caps and seals it permanently and you never paint it again. If the timber underneath has already rotted, capping over it just hides the problem, so the rotted section gets replaced first. We will tell you honestly which one your fascia actually needs.
The gutter is fixed to the fascia, so any real fascia work means removing that section of gutter and re-hanging it. That is actually the ideal time to check the gutter, re-set the fall and re-bracket it while the access is there. If your gutters are also near the end of their life, doing both together saves you paying for the same scaffold and access twice.
It comes down to how many lineal metres are affected and the access. Replacing a rotted section and re-hanging the gutter is a modest job; capping a full run in Colorbond fascia is priced by the metre. We measure it up, give you a fixed written quote, and there is a $0 call-out fee to come and look.
Yes. Barge boards take the full brunt of driving rain and sun on the gable ends and are often the first timber to go on an older roof. We repair or replace them and can cap them in matching Colorbond at the same time as the fascia, so the whole roof edge is sealed and consistent.
Solid edge, straight gutters, no more painting
Catch the rot early and it is a section. Leave it and it is the whole run plus the gutters. Book an inspection.
